This is a process where patients donate blood prior to elective surgery for the purpose of re-transfusion if needed. It is a method that may reduce the transmission of infection and transfusion reactions. There are risks associated with PAD. The referral must be approved by the Canadian Blood Services and is offered in special circumstances such as, in cases when high blood loss is expected or in patients with rare blood types.  If approved, several steps in the process are required. It is never considered in patients with anemia or significant illness such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension.
